First: Your blog is just lovely and it’s one of my new fav little sources of inspiration, especially around starting my own business.

Second: I’m glad you posted this. thank you. :) As someone going on on their own, it’s hard to show doubts because it might be seen as “weakness”…which, aint too good for a business. But we all have em…sometimes the drive is hard to find but the good thing is it always comes back! I’ve found that sitting down with someone I trust and respect (usually my oh-so understanding boyfriend) helps so much. They set you back on track and give you the little push you need. I also love perusing blogs/sites of people I admire…nothing gets ya workin harder than a little good ol envy ;)

Oh Adele – I’m sorry about your carpet & baseboards. But I’m even sorrier to hear your drive is in the crapper. Think about how these two parallel one another for a minute. You didn’t plan on either one happening, yet they’re both here, very real and in need of your immediate attention b/c they’re both so physically ‘present’ everyday. You said you’ll just rip the carpet up to reveal the concrete…the foundation of your home, your life. Well, why can’t you do the same with modernemotive? Rip the surface layer off and get to the foundation. What’s down there? What do you see? How can you make it functional? What will it take to build on it? How can you make it work within the confines of what you have already? Just like the concrete beneath the surface, you DO have a solid base to work with…it’s simple beauty is what makes it so appealing…just like the damn concrete! Seriously, I could go on and on about cement! Just do a little soul-searching, force yourself to answer some questions about where you were going this month before your drive got derailed, and get back to it pronto! Please don’t stop! The world needs more fresh ideas and they need to be eco baby!!!

What drives me is simple. Now I’ve had a taste of working from home, for myself whilst being able to look after my son I could never go back to working in an office for ‘the man’. Every time I feel like I lack motivation I remember what my life was like commuting 3 hours every day and how awful life would be if I had to go back to that. It would actually be worse now that I have a son as I would only see him on weekends and what is the point in that?

That and I love what I am doing. I love helping my clients achieve business success and it’s such a great feeling it beats getting a regular paycheck anyday.

We bought a small home 3 years ago and took it down to the studs and slab. We are doing all the work ourselves as we have the money so it’s a long-term project :) But what I wanted to share was that my husband and I ground down, re-poured part of and ultimately polished the concrete of our slab for our floor and we love it! We ran into a lot of snags as it’s a mid-century house, but it was worth all the work :) Would love to see your floor when it’s finished!

As for what drives me…generally speaking I’m confident and feel that at least some of what I have to contribute is worth while. Though some days it’s as basic as the reality that my family is depending on me that gets me out of bed in the morning…
